There are three stores in Wakayama City.

I’d like to introduce Maruyama, a famous restaurant serving “Shakomae-style” Chinese soba, a light soy sauce-based Wakayama ramen.

Maruyama Chuka Soba Komatsubara Branch

This iconic restaurant, with its striking red sign and white letters, is one of Wakayama’s long-standing establishments.

This time, I visited their Komatsubara branch near the Wakayama Red Cross Hospital.

Founded in 1960, this popular spot has been beloved by locals for over 60 years.

Let’s head inside!

The bright red counter tables instantly give you the feel of an authentic old-school Chinese restaurant.

The basket on the counter holds hayasushi and boiled eggs, which are classic side dishes with Wakayama ramen.

You pay for these side dishes when settling the bill, based on the honor system.

Maruyama’s Menu

The main Chinese soba comes in several varieties.

Chinese Soba Menu
  • Chinese Soba: 650 yen
  • Large Chinese Soba: 900 yen
  • Char Siu Ramen: 900 yen
  • Kimchi Ramen: 900 yen
Side Menu
  • Gyoza: 400 yen
  • Quick Sushi: 150 yen
  • Rolled Sushi: 200 yen
  • Egg: 100 yen
  • Rice: 200 yen
  • Egg Over Rice: 300 yen

The oden is available as a set with Chinese soba (3 pieces for an additional 250 yen) or as individual pieces for 120 yen each.

Authentic Shakomae-style Chinese Soba

I ordered the “Large size Chuka-soba.”

Since the bowl is big, the Char siu looks a little sparse, but rest assured, there are three slices in there.

The presentation is quite simple.

The soup has a slightly cloudy soy sauce color.

It’s light yet rich in flavor. The unique depth of the Shakomae-style soup is irresistible.

The noodles are straight and thin.

Honestly, they were a bit too soft for my taste, lacking that bite I usually enjoy.

It seems you can ask for firmer noodles, so I’ll try that next time.

That said, it was still very delicious.
