What Makes Kyoto University Shirahama Aquarium Unique?

What sets the Shirahama Aquarium apart is that it’s not just a tourist attraction. As part of Kyoto University, it emphasizes academic exhibits and education, giving it a truly distinctive character compared to typical aquariums.

Highlight 1|Exhibits Rooted in Local Nature

While many aquariums showcase exotic species from around the world, Shirahama Aquarium focuses on marine life that actually lives in the local waters around Shirahama.

This approach reflects their educational mission of “presenting nature as it is,” helping visitors feel a deeper connection to the environment.

Even though the aquarium is relatively small, the number of species displayed ranks among the top 10 out of over 100 aquariums in Japan.

Highlight 2|Academic Insights Unique to a University Aquarium

Take a closer look at the exhibit panels. Instead of simple “cute” or “cool” descriptions, you’ll find thorough explanations based on scientific classification, ecology, and regional significance—truly at a university level.

In some parts of the facility, actual research is carried out, and you may see students or researchers moving in and out of the back areas.

They also occasionally hold behind-the-scenes tours guided by researchers, giving visitors a chance not just to “see,” but also to “think” and learn—one of the aquarium’s biggest appeals.

Highlight 3|A Calm and Relaxed Atmosphere

Unlike larger aquariums, you won’t find long lines or noisy crowds here. The atmosphere is very calm and quiet.

This makes it a great place not only for families with kids but also for solo travelers and couples. Weekdays in particular are very peaceful, perfect for those who want to take their time observing the exhibits.

Highlights and Exhibits at Shirahama Aquarium

Since the aquarium is part of Kyoto University, its focus is on research. That’s why the exhibits specialize in marine life—especially invertebrates and fish—from the local Shirahama area.

The number of invertebrates on display is especially impressive, with around 250 species at any given time and up to 500 species over the course of a year—making it one of the largest in Japan.

Pamphlet from the official website
Tank Room 1

This huge 240-ton tank is home to large migratory fish such as giant trevally and bigeye trevally, as well as several shark species.

Tank Room 2

This is the aquarium’s centerpiece, featuring around 250 species of invertebrates organized by groups. You can see sea urchins, starfish, sea cucumbers, shrimp, crabs, octopuses, anemones, corals, and more.

For example, they display 15 species of sea urchins and 10 species of starfish together, so you can compare the differences side by side.

You’ll also find schools of small fish such as fusiliers and round scads.

Tank Room 3

This area changes depending on the season and ongoing research projects.

Here you might encounter rare creatures not often seen elsewhere, such as the fluorescent tube anemone.

Tank Room 4

This section focuses mainly on fish, organized both by habitat and by taxonomy.

  • By Habitat: Fish and creatures from tidal flats, rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and other environments are displayed in tanks that recreate their natural settings. One highlight is the tidal flat tank, which reproduces the ebb and flow of the tide.
  • By Taxonomy: Fish from the same group are displayed together, making it easy to compare their similarities and differences.

The aquarium also hosts occasional guided tours, feeding experiences, and special exhibitions led by researchers and staff.

Inside, you’ll also find a reading corner where you can look up more about marine life, and magnifying lenses to help you take a closer look at the exhibits.

Summary

The Kyoto University Shirahama Aquarium is more than just a sightseeing spot—it’s a valuable place to learn about nature and the local environment. The exhibits, which feel like snapshots of Shirahama’s ocean with its corals and coastal creatures, are not only fascinating but also deeply educational.

Easy access, affordable admission, and the chance to combine it with nearby sightseeing spots make it even more appealing.

If you want to experience the ocean in a calm, thoughtful way, this is the perfect place. Be sure to add Shirahama Aquarium to your trip—you’ll likely come away with discoveries and impressions beyond what you imagined.
